The draft gear (coupler buffer) is an indispensable core part of railway freight wagon coupler buffer system, installed inside wagon underframe behind the Grade E steel coupler.

It mainly absorbs and dissipates longitudinal collision impact force between freight carriages during shunting, acceleration and emergency braking. By friction and elastic compression, it converts impact kinetic energy into heat energy for release, effectively reducing rigid shock to wagon frame, coupler and goods, avoiding cargo damage and vehicle structural cracking, and stabilizing the whole train running.
